  • Venus 2 Commission

Venus 2 was a commissioned piece. After viewing the painting “Rebirth of Venus”, the client decided they wanted a more surreal and whimsical approach with the same concept coming from Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. You can read more about the inspiration for “Rebirth of Venus” [Here.]

Their request was that the piece incorporate Venus being born out of the ocean, using a pastel color palette, and a prominent seashore theme. It was interesting to once again reinvent Venus being born out of the sea, and to incorporate a more realistic yet surreal figure. This opportunity to use the same subject in a different way really shows the diversity of how the same story can be told and convey different meaning with different imagery.

Venus 2* was SOLD in 2014
This piece is included in the Surrealist Imagery [2008-2011] series

  • Rebirth of Venus

Rebirth of Venus was inspired by the famous painting “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli in 1486. It was a commissioned work for the Medici family of Florence. This painting is one that I was first introduced to after studying the Renaissance. Venus’ facial expression, her eyes, her mouth and her long locks of hair are something that has captivated viewers for centuries. The mythology behind the painting is the story of the goddess of beauty (Venus) being born out of the sea as a grown woman. Botticelli’s depiction of this story is fantastic and one of the most famous and iconic Italian Renaissance works of all time. Being that Renaissance actually means “Rebirth”, I had the strong desire to reinvent this masterpiece and capture the essence of the story with my own style. She is reborn into the modern world with countless layers and perspectives (inspired by orphism and cubism). This reflects the idea that her beauty can be interpreted in endless perspectives and interpretations. Multiple perspectives include her silhouette as well as her glance downward. The idea of beauty changes with different generations and with time. Capturing the movement and the feeling of ever-changing beauty was the goal of this piece.

Rebirth was SOLD in 2009, and also received an Honorable Mention from Artworks Gallery in Richmond, VA.

  • The Tooth of Time Commission

This particular piece was requested from an awe-inspiring and close friend of mine. Although we only see each other occasionally, when we get together it is as if no time has passed. Being a natural outdoors woman, she has spent long periods of time in the gorgeous mountains of New Mexico. She requested a painting (in my style) of an iconic landmark in that area, “ The Tooth of Time”. Historically it was a landmark for those on the Santa Fe Trail which marked about 7 days until they arrived at their destination.

One of my goals was to use a color palette that represents my friend’s upbeat and adventurous personality and the tribal Southwest. Painted in an abstracted style, I was able to allude to the image of the landmark and capture the flow of the mountains and the sky.

My intention was for the sky and the mountains to connect like a puzzle, overlapping and becoming intertwined, reflecting each other. In this way, the separation between the sky and the mountains collide. This painting is a collaboration of my friend’s memories and my interpretation of the experience of arriving at “The Tooth of Time”.

  • Pose

Created in 2008, “Pose” was inspired by the expression of dance. This piece was created after I came across a photo of my cousin, an extremely talented and professional dancer. I have always felt inspired and intrigued by dancers. As a visual person, I find dance even more captivating than listening to music and the collaboration of both is a fantastic form of expression.

I feel that dance directly relates to my style of artwork. A dancer’s strength and elegance is something that I enjoy incorporating into my work. We both strive to capture or use motion in different ways while expressing emotion. Although I am not a dancer, I feel a connection with how they communicate to their audience and how I communicate to mine. We both use movement with different instruments: the body and the elements of art. This piece was made to take that emotion expressed by the dancers’ pose and add visual energy exuding from each movement. The colors emphasize that energy of this regal pose and the carvings through thick texture give the painting depth and dimension.

    Pose* was sold in 2009.

  • Pose 2 Commission

I have finished a commissioned painting based on Pose (Read more about Pose* HERE/ Shop Pose Painting Piece HERE) This piece was very fulfilling to create. I chose a different dancer/pose and incorporated some distinct textural materials. The client chose the original painting ‘Pose’ for me to work from but, also allowed me freedom to explore new elements within this piece. It has turned out to be one of my favorites. I think the metallic paints give it a special quality just like it’s sister painting ‘Pose’.

  • Photosynthesis

This piece was appropriately named after the cycle in which plants convert sunlight, minerals, and carbon dioxide into energy in order to grow and produce oxygen. It is a cycle that, like many scientific processes, is usually explained using textbook diagrams. In contrast to understanding a technical diagram, I felt the need to visually capture this event taking place through abstraction. Photosynthesis will hopefully spark interest in science as well as the artistic and abstract feeling of energy through life processes, which we many times overlook in our world.

With it’s unique sculptural qualities, it can stand up (as shown) but was created to be hung on the wall. Although the inspiration was from scientific life processes, the 1.5 ft by 4 ft scale and curvaceous figurative element hints at the female form and relates to the reproduction of life and “Mother Nature.”

Photosynthesis was SOLD in 2009. This piece is included in the” Somewhere between a painting and a sculpture [2009-2012] “series

  • Mother & Child

Mother & Child, was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s painting ‘Mother & Child.’ In contrast to Maternal and Cradle, Mother & Child gives a more surreal image of the two figures. While still incorporating abstracted elements, this piece allowed me to experiment with surrealism and build off of Klimt’s inspiration. Mother & Child was painted on a 10in x 20in canvas with acrylics and donated to the Ronald McDonald Foundation in 2011.

  • Metropolis

‘Metropolis’ was painted in 2008 with the concept of capturing the architectural elements within the city. Through the process of exploring different downtown areas and city-scapes, I collected a series of images that I segmented and eventually developed into this image. The color palette for this piece reflects the pastel colors used in “Fly”, also painted in 2008. I chose these colors to represent the city’s bright collaboration of styles and constant movement. Along with alluding to the different styles of architecture from different eras, I found myself building my own abstracted puzzle of shapes and color. ‘Metropolis’ shows the modern concrete jungle while hinting at the influence of classical Roman and Greek architecture found in most cities.

  • Indecision

There was a time when the indecisiveness of making a life decision consumed me. Making art has always been, for me, a NECESSARY release from the monotony of daily life. Without any rules, I fell in love with the idea that everything I made was a part of me that I could put out into the world. I wanted to leave behind these pieces of me, and making fine art was how I wanted to tell my story. In the same way, I was in love with all things design as well. I felt the pressure to choose one life or the other. This was an impossibility. I refused to choose a label and I decided to make my own path. This painting is about the struggle of self identity specifically with a professional career.

There are two distinct figures in this piece. The first on the far right side of the painting is a female silhouette and the second is the back of a female silhouette leaning all the way toward the far left side of the painting, emphasizing the two choices. Connected to the first silhouette are two other perspectives of the face showing the agony of the indecision. One face is looking upward towards the future of the choice on the right side of the piece, and the other is looking outward toward the left side extending her arm and trying to hold onto the other option at the same time. The second figure on the left has her leg extended to the left of the canvas and the other leg bent toward the right of the canvas. She is bending her body and stretches her torso to the left of the painting, while only showing the back of her head on the left. Other than the female figures in this piece there is also another very distinct silhouette that embodies the entire painting. The lion. The lion symbolizes the courage, strength, and power to stand behind the decisions we make.

  • Insight

This acrylic painting on canvas was made through a process of quick and active brush strokes. The figure of the man contemplating evolved through countless layers of paint and brought insight to my subconscious. This piece was inadvertently modeled after my younger brother. • Impermanence

The idea behind this piece is that motion is impermanent. As human beings we are all constantly in motion. After experimenting with multiple pieces of layered patterns and using abstraction to capture motion, a realization happened. This realization occurred after finishing “Struggle”, (the painting that was finished before embarking on “Impermanence”). “Struggle,” contained figurative elements created subconsciously within the abstraction. Noticing this element, I began “Impermanence” with the goal of capturing motion like I had with the previous paintings, but emphasizing the human figure. The figure shows multiple perspectives and was inspired by the cubist, orphist, and futurist art movements. The figure emerged through the detailed organic environment, and has been interpreted by many to resemble an athletic runner and/or Don Quixote type pose.

  • Fly

Even in a seemingly free society there are those suffering from unwanted thoughts or experiences, or trapped in a helpless situation needing to escape. The ability (if only for a moment) to fly away through our own mental state is within all of us. Freedom is a state of mind.

While painting “Fly” I wanted to evoke this mental state. The light pastel colors emphasize a calm and tranquil energy. The image of the soaring eagle symbolizes freedom and independence. My hope is that “Fly” will capture this feeling and help people achieve freedom through visual escapism.

    Fly* was SOLD in 2013

  • Elephants

“Elephants,” a mixed media piece I created in 2009 while exploring the use of pattern. After doing much research on different cultural patterns and textile designs, I decided to create a piece that incorporated a feeling of an African Safari. I wanted to allude to the presence of the African elephant through abstract patterns. I used countless layers of paint and texture and incorporated a color scheme of yellow, orange, brown, gold and teal. This piece is special to me not only because I hid elephant silhouettes in it, but it is also a great conversation starter at exhibits.

This painting received an award at the James Madison University Undergraduate Exhibit in 2009 and was SOLD in 2012.

  • Endurance

I don’t consider myself much of a sports fan, but when it comes to the Olympics I can’t resist. I have always been inspired by the physical and mental endurance of the athletes. I felt the need to visualize through abstraction the unseen motion, power, and energy which exudes from their bodies. I wanted to capture the moment when they give everything they have to push themselves to the limit.

“Endurance” was inspired by the aquatic powerhouse, Michael Phelps. Specifically, after watching the 100M butterfly in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he won by one-hundredth of a second. His last extra ounce of energy was unbelievable! I decided to paint this piece representing that last moment, breath, and stroke endured through such exhaustion. I want the viewer to experience the energy in this nearly life-size painting, standing face-to-face as the athlete shoots out of the water.

  • Cubist Creation of Adam

Cubist Creation of Adam-Time lapse Video
A while ago a friend suggested the idea of creating a time lapse video of the progression of a painting. The natural attraction to attack a large blank canvas with paint made the decision to make this video easy. At many exhibits in the past people tend to ask questions like “how long did this take you?” and “how do you work?”. Although this is simply a summary of the creation for this piece, hopefully it gives more insight to the viewer of the PROCESS of painting…which is usually only shared between the artist and their canvas. Enjoy!

  • Cradle

Cradle, one of my more recent pieces was done on 16in x 16in wood board with acrylics. This piece emerged through countless layers of paint and eventually took shape as a mother “cradling” her baby. The intention of this piece was to exaggerate the mothers leaned in position and her entanglement of her arms and legs with the swaddled baby. This represents the unconditional love and intertwined bond between the Mother and her newborn. Another element of this painting is the additional imagery of a male figure or “father figure” alluded in a more abstract manner, with his arms wrapped around the other figures, protecting and supporting his family. Cradle was sold in 2015.
