  • Pose

Created in 2008, “Pose” was inspired by the expression of dance. This piece was created after I came across a photo of my cousin, an extremely talented and professional dancer. I have always felt inspired and intrigued by dancers. As a visual person, I find dance even more captivating than listening to music and the collaboration of both is a fantastic form of expression.

I feel that dance directly relates to my style of artwork. A dancer’s strength and elegance is something that I enjoy incorporating into my work. We both strive to capture or use motion in different ways while expressing emotion. Although I am not a dancer, I feel a connection with how they communicate to their audience and how I communicate to mine. We both use movement with different instruments: the body and the elements of art. This piece was made to take that emotion expressed by the dancers’ pose and add visual energy exuding from each movement. The colors emphasize that energy of this regal pose and the carvings through thick texture give the painting depth and dimension.

    Pose* was sold in 2009.

  • Metropolis

‘Metropolis’ was painted in 2008 with the concept of capturing the architectural elements within the city. Through the process of exploring different downtown areas and city-scapes, I collected a series of images that I segmented and eventually developed into this image. The color palette for this piece reflects the pastel colors used in “Fly”, also painted in 2008. I chose these colors to represent the city’s bright collaboration of styles and constant movement. Along with alluding to the different styles of architecture from different eras, I found myself building my own abstracted puzzle of shapes and color. ‘Metropolis’ shows the modern concrete jungle while hinting at the influence of classical Roman and Greek architecture found in most cities.

  • Insight

This acrylic painting on canvas was made through a process of quick and active brush strokes. The figure of the man contemplating evolved through countless layers of paint and brought insight to my subconscious. This piece was inadvertently modeled after my younger brother. The painting embodies his philosophical personality and emphasizes his trademark pondering pose.

  • Impermanence

The idea behind this piece is that motion is impermanent. As human beings we are all constantly in motion. After experimenting with multiple pieces of layered patterns and using abstraction to capture motion, a realization happened. This realization occurred after finishing “Struggle”, (the painting that was finished before embarking on “Impermanence”). “Struggle,” contained figurative elements created subconsciously within the abstraction. Noticing this element, I began “Impermanence” with the goal of capturing motion like I had with the previous paintings, but emphasizing the human figure. The figure shows multiple perspectives and was inspired by the cubist, orphist, and futurist art movements. The figure emerged through the detailed organic environment, and has been interpreted by many to resemble an athletic runner and/or Don Quixote type pose.

  • Cubist Creation of Adam

Cubist Creation of Adam-Time lapse Video
A while ago a friend suggested the idea of creating a time lapse video of the progression of a painting. The natural attraction to attack a large blank canvas with paint made the decision to make this video easy. At many exhibits in the past people tend to ask questions like “how long did this take you?” and “how do you work?”. Although this is simply a summary of the creation for this piece, hopefully it gives more insight to the viewer of the PROCESS of painting…which is usually only shared between the artist and their canvas. Enjoy!
